You need a professional Chicago address for your business. You do not need a downtown lease to get one.
A virtual business address gives you a commercial street address you can register an LLC with, open a bank account on, and verify a Google Business Profile at — while your home address stays off the public record. This guide covers what one actually is, what separates a usable address from one that gets rejected, and how to set it up.
Why a home address costs you more than you think
When someone is deciding whether to send you a contract, they look you up. If your business address resolves to an apartment building, it plants a question you never get to answer.
That is the soft cost. The hard cost is legal.
The moment you register an LLC in Illinois, the address on that filing becomes public record. Anyone can search it — customers, vendors, people with a grievance. You cannot un-publish it later without filing an amendment. For anyone running a business from home, that is the real argument for a separate business address, and it has nothing to do with image.
What a virtual address is not
It is not a PO Box. It is not a mailbox at a shipping store. Both are mail drops, and both get rejected where it counts — state filings, bank applications, Google verification.
A virtual business address is a real commercial street address in a building with staff, where your mail is received by a person and handled on your instructions.
Why this matters: the distinction is not cosmetic. Illinois will not accept a PO Box for LLC registration. Banks applying Know Your Customer rules will not accept one either. Google will suspend a listing verified at a mailbox store. The address either has a building and a lease behind it, or it does not.
What you actually get
- A real Chicago street address in a commercial building, usable on filings, invoices, your website and your Google listing.
- Mail and package handling by staff who sign for deliveries from every carrier, not just USPS.
- Digital mail scanning and forwarding. Envelope photos the day mail arrives, then you choose: scan it, forward it, shred it, or pick it up.
- Access to physical space when it matters. Meeting rooms for the client who wants to come in, and a desk when you need one.
That last one is the difference between an address and a base of operations. A mail-forwarding service can give you the first three. Only a real building gives you the fourth.
What this solves, concretely
Registering your LLC. Illinois requires a physical street address for the company and for the registered agent. A commercial address satisfies both. Many providers, including us, offer registered agent service at the same address, so your legal notices and your mail arrive in the same place.
Opening a business bank account. Know Your Customer rules require a verifiable physical address. This is one of the most common reasons an application stalls.
Getting found locally. A Google Business Profile requires a real, verifiable location. Verified listings appear in Maps and local search, which for most local businesses is the single largest source of inbound discovery. The address has to be one Google will accept — see our guide to Google Business Profile verification with a virtual address.
Keeping your home private. Your filings, invoices, marketing and public listings all point somewhere that is not your house.
Staying lean. A private office in Chicago runs into four figures a month. A virtual address is a fraction of that, and the difference goes into the business.
How to choose a provider
Most of the market looks identical from the outside. Four things separate a usable address from one that creates problems later.
A real commercial building. Put the address into Google Maps and look at what appears. If it resolves to a strip mall or a shipping store, banks and Google may flag it. If it resolves to an office building with a lobby and other tenants, you are fine.
What is actually bundled. Compare the total, not the headline price. Mail scanning, forwarding, and registered agent service bought separately often cost more than a plan that includes them.
Whether you can walk in. Can you book a meeting room at your own business address? Take a call in a private room? Collect a package the day it arrives? An address you can physically use is worth more than one you cannot.
Whether the paperwork holds. Ask directly: will I get a signed lease or agreement I can submit for a business license and an LLC filing? If the answer is vague, that is a no. This is the question most people forget to ask, and the one that causes the most trouble later.
Setting it up: four steps
Step 1 — Choose your plan
Decide what the address has to do. If it only receives mail, a business mailbox is enough. If it appears on a license, a state filing, or a Google listing, you need a virtual office with a lease attached. Our virtual office is $75/month with a $95 one-time setup on a six-month minimum, or $800 paid annually with no setup fee — full pricing here.
Step 2 — Complete USPS Form 1583
This is federal law, not provider paperwork. Any commercial mail receiving agency must verify your identity before handling your mail. You will need two forms of ID — one photo, one secondary — and notarization.
Most rejections come from mismatched names or blurry ID scans, not from the form itself. We notarize it on site, free for members, and our step-by-step Form 1583 guide walks through the details.
Step 3 — Update your registrations
File with the Illinois Secretary of State — either using the new address on formation, or filing an amendment for an existing entity. Update your registered agent at the same time if it is changing. File IRS Form 8822-B to change the address on your EIN. Then update your bank.
Step 4 — Update everywhere else
Consistency matters more than people expect, because inconsistent addresses across the web weaken local search performance. Update your website footer and contact page, your Google Business Profile, your social profiles, directory listings, invoices, and marketing material. Use the identical format, including the suite number, every time.
What a local operator gives you that a national one cannot
National virtual address services run software across thousands of locations they do not staff. That works fine until something needs a human — a certified letter that has to be signed for, a package that needs to go out today, a landlord verification call, a client who wants to meet somewhere real.
We are at 1655 S Blue Island Ave in Pilsen, ten minutes from the Loop, with parking on site. The same building holds your mail, your meeting rooms, a podcast and video studio, private offices if you outgrow the virtual plan, and a notary for the Form 1583 you need on day one.
The practical version: when something goes wrong with your mail, you can call a number and reach someone who can walk to your mailbox.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a virtual business address to open a business bank account?
Generally yes, provided it is a real commercial street address rather than a PO Box or mailbox store. Banks require a verifiable physical address under Know Your Customer rules. Bring your formation documents, EIN letter, and the lease or agreement from your address provider.
Is a virtual business address legal for an LLC in Illinois?
Yes. Illinois requires a physical street address for the LLC and for the registered agent, and a commercial virtual address satisfies that where a PO Box does not. Using one keeps your home address off public filings. If you want the registered agent handled at the same address, that is normally a separate, inexpensive service.
Will my mail be secure?
Mail is delivered into a staffed commercial building rather than an unattended box. Staff sign for deliveries, log what arrives, and handle it per your instructions — scan, forward, hold for pickup, or shred. That is materially more secure than a residential mailbox.
Can I get a Google Business Profile with a virtual address?
Sometimes, and the conditions matter. Google requires a real location with staffed presence, and it suspends listings verified at mailbox stores or addresses shared by many unrelated businesses. Ask your provider directly whether their address is Google-verifiable and whether you get your own suite number before you rely on it.
How much does a virtual business address cost in Chicago?
It varies widely depending on whether you are buying a mail drop or a real address with a lease. Ours is $75 a month with a $95 setup fee on a six-month term, or $800 a year paid annually with the setup fee waived, and it includes the lease document, unlimited mail scanning, directory signage and monthly meeting room hours. A mailbox-only plan is $35 a month.
What is the difference between a virtual address and a virtual office?
A virtual address receives mail. A virtual office adds the documentation and services that make the address usable as your business location — a signed lease for licensing and filings, your company name on the building directory, and meeting room access. If your address needs to appear on anything official, you need the second one.

An address is infrastructure. It either works when a bank, the state, or Google checks it, or it creates a problem at the worst possible moment.
