You can switch your registered agent whenever you want, and it is a small filing. For an LLC it is the Statement of Change, form LLC-1.36/1.37. For a corporation it is form BCA 5.10/5.20. The state fee is $25. Once it is filed, the new agent and its Illinois street address are on record and the switch is done.
People change agents for ordinary reasons. Their old service raised its price, or is out of state and slow to forward mail, or they were their own agent and are tired of their home address sitting on the public record. There is one thing to watch. If your current agent resigns and you do not appoint a new one within 60 days, the state can hit the company with a $100 penalty, so you do not want a gap.
