For most new businesses, the first funding is not a loan. It is a card.
It shows up before revenue does, it approves in minutes, and it will quietly become your most expensive debt if you let a balance sit on it.
Lobi Space is not a lender and does not issue cards. This is what to understand before you use one as funding. The wider view is in how small business funding works.
What a card is good at
- Small recurring expenses you clear in full every month.
- Separating business spending from personal spending, cleanly, from day one.
- Short float between buying inventory and selling it.
- Building a record that later lenders can look at.
Used that way, the credit is effectively free and the rewards are real.
What a card is bad at
- Funding a purchase that takes a year to earn out.
- Covering a revenue shortfall you cannot explain.
- Anything you would need a payment plan for.
Card interest is priced for convenience, not for patient capital. Carry a balance for twelve months and you have chosen one of the most expensive ways to borrow.
The personal guarantee
Nearly every small business card requires one. You are personally responsible for the balance even though the card carries your company name.
That has two consequences. Your personal credit usually determines approval, and your personal assets sit behind the debt if the business cannot pay. An LLC does not change that, because you signed the guarantee yourself.
Read the application. If it asks for your Social Security number and personal income, a guarantee is part of the deal.
Building business credit
Business credit is a separate file from your personal one, and it does not build itself.
- Get an EIN and use it consistently.
- Open a business bank account in the legal name.
- Use one consistent business address everywhere. Filings, bank, applications and vendors should match. Our virtual office in Chicago is built for exactly that consistency.
- Open accounts with vendors who report payment history.
- Pay before the due date, every time.
Some issuers report business card activity to consumer bureaus and some do not. If your goal is building the business file specifically, ask the issuer what they report and where.
Choosing between cards
Ignore the sign up bonus for a second and check four things.
1. The interest rate, in case you ever carry a balance.
2. The annual fee against what you actually spend.
3. Whether rewards match your real expense categories.
4. Whether activity is reported to business credit bureaus.
A card with a smaller bonus that reports to business bureaus can be worth more over two years than a bigger upfront offer.
Where the card stops
The signal that you have outgrown a card is simple. If you are making minimum payments, or using one card to pay another, the card is no longer funding. It is a symptom.
At that point the right conversation is about a line of credit, receivables funding or a term loan with a payment you can model. Start with short term loans and lines of credit.
When Lobi Capital opens, you will be able to lay out what you need in one place and continue with a participating provider. Joining the launch list is not an application and does not affect your credit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a business credit card with a new business and no revenue?
Often yes. Many issuers approve sole proprietors and new entities based on personal credit and stated income, because you are signing a personal guarantee.
Does a business credit card affect my personal credit?
It can. The application usually involves a personal credit check, and some issuers report account activity to consumer bureaus. Ask the issuer what they report before you apply.
Do I need an LLC to get a business credit card?
No. Sole proprietors can apply using their own name and Social Security number. An EIN and a separate business bank account make bookkeeping and credit building cleaner.
How do I build business credit fast?
There is no shortcut. Use consistent business details everywhere, open accounts with vendors who report, keep balances low, and pay early. The file builds over months of clean history.
